Gophers' Gray hopes to take next step at QB

Many of his passes sailed over receivers' heads. He had trouble reading defenses. Often times, he panicked in the pocket.
That was the old MarQueis Gray. That was the MarQueis Gray that was thrust into the starting quarterback role for the University of Minnesota after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons as a wide receiver.
The new MarQueis Gray is more confident, more composed. He now has a year of experience as a starter under his belt, and he's hoping that can carry over into his senior season this year with the Gophers.
"I wasn't having confidence in myself (early last year). I'm just now getting back to the quarterback mode," Gray said Thursday, Minnesota's first day of spring football practices. "I hadn't played since senior year in high school. I just felt nervous back there. As the season went on, I just got more and more comfortable and I just stayed in the backfield a little more."
Gray finished the 2011 season with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions as he threw for 1,495 yards. He did more damage with his feet, rushing for a team-high 966 yards and six touchdowns on 199 carries.
But Gray insists he wants to be more of a pocket passer than he was last season and not rely so much on the run. He also set a goal for himself for 2012: complete 60 percent of his passes. That would be quite the uptick from his 50.7 percent completion rate last year, which ranked him dead last among Big Ten quarterbacks and 111th in college football.
"I believe I can do that," Gray said of being a 60 percent passer. "It's going to take the reps before practice, during practice and off the practice field. That's my main thing is just get the throwing down and the timing down with my receivers."
Gray had his bright spots last season. He rushed for 171 yards, a school record for quarterbacks, in a 29-23 win over Miami (Ohio). He completed 19 of 32 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns on the road against Michigan State — albeit in a loss.
But when asked Thursday what his top memory was from the Gophers' 3-9 season in 2011, Gray's answer was team-oriented. It had nothing to do with his personal achievements — perhaps a sign of his maturity.
"That Illinois game, I came to the sidelines and saw a lot more confidence through all the players," Gray said of Minnesota's 27-7 season finale win over the Illini. "Even our training staff had the juice that we needed. We've got to have a lot more swagger and have fun on game days as well as in practice."
In that game, Gray was just 7-of-14 for 85 yards and a touchdown, but he also ran for 167 yards and two scores on the ground. As much as Minnesota is hoping that win carries into 2012, the Gophers hope Gray's confidence he exuded at the end of the season will continue to grow now that he's had a full year as the starting quarterback.
"I just think it's the comfort level back there. He's a lot more at ease," offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said. "… I don't think MarQueis has ever doubted his ability to play. I think he feels more comfortable that everyone else now knows that he can play. That's a big part of the process."
Gray said he's entering spring ball with the expectation that he's the team's starting quarterback, but he knows there will always be plenty of competition behind him. Sophomore Max Shortell filled in several times as a freshman last year when Gray was injured, and played the entire game against Michigan — a 58-0 Gophers loss.
Also in camp this spring is a pair of highly-touted high school quarterbacks from the state of Minnesota in Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner. Both have enrolled early in order to get a head start in spring. Nelson was the top-ranked high school quarterback in the state during his senior season at Mankato West. Leidner also had an impressive senior campaign at Lakeville South.
As a team leader and a senior, Gray said he knows it's up to him to show the younger quarterbacks the ropes. But he knows they'll be waiting in the wings if he falters.
"There's competition because first of all, you don't know what's going to happen. You never want anybody to get comfortable," said Gophers head coach Jerry Kill. "If you're working with anybody at your job and you've got somebody comfortable, then you're going to get fired. I don't believe in (comfort). I believe in keeping people going the uphill direction. Now, is he our starting quarterback? You bet. But if there's three guys back there and somebody out performs them, then you're going to play the best player."

Mike Leach wants a 64 Team Playoff
While there's been a lot of support for a playoff in college football coming from people in power lately, something tells me that head football coach Mike Leach of Washington States idea for a college football playoff is never going to fly. He's proposing a 64 team playoff. The downside to it is there will be alot of schols with 6-6 records playing in it. The upside to it is that the small schools, like Florida Atlantic, orTroy State would get a chance to play for a National Championship if they ran the table. This system would prove to the college football world if a smaller conference school could hold it's own with a powerhouse like the SEC.I have supported the idea of a playoff in college football for just about my entire adult life. I understand the concept behind Mike Leach thinking, but the idea of a 64-team playoff in college football will is stretching it way to far. There's already enough uproar over the idea of a 6-6 team qualifying for a bowl game, I can only imagine what people would say when 5-5 teams, or maybe 4-6 teams, qualified for a playoff.
I hope to see a playoff implemented in college football. In the years past some teams, (Auburn 2004) have been cheated out of a chance to play for the title. A system needs to be put into place that will allow a true champion to be crowned. Read more about a 64 team playoff here
Tim Tebow is leaving on a jet plane... To the New York Jets
Tim Tebow was suppose to be the starter headed into training camp with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos were the from-outta-nowhere team that ended up with Peyton Manning, the off-the-radar Jets appeared to have done the same with Tim Tebow. the Jets traded a couple of late round picks early wednesday to aquire Tebow.Brocos vice president, John Elway had this to say about tebow,
"Our goal was to do the best thing for Tim and the Broncos, and I believe the opportunity that presented itself with the New York Jets accomplishes that objective," Elway said. "Tim made a lot of strides last year and has a very promising career ahead of him. If anyone is willing to put the work in to be great, it's Tim Tebow.
"I have a great deal of respect for Tim and the positive impact he makes both on the field and in the community. He has a bright future in this league, and I'm hopeful he will enjoy continued success with the Jets
"Tim Tebow deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he accomplished and how he carried himself during his time with the Broncos," he said. "From taking over a 1-4 team and leading it to the playoffs to energizing our fans and this community, Tim left an extraordinary mark on this organization. That's a powerful quote by John elway, one of the best qb's in the history of the NFL.. He clearly believes Tebow has the tools needed to make it as a quarterback in this league. But now Tebow is on a team that has a franchise quarterback in Mark Sanchez as their leader. Tannenbaum made it clear that Sanchez was the starter The Jets GM also noted that, "every quarterback in the NFL has a backup and we just changed who ours is.
So what are the Jets' plans for Tebow? Could they choose to use him in the same versatile, non-conventional way they used Brad Smith. Mike Tannenbaum has stated in a news conference that head coach Rex Ryan believes in the wildcat package. We all know Tim Tebow is the best quarterback to have in place to run the wildcat. So he may get a significant amount of playing time.
God works in Mysterious ways. God is definetley on Tim Tebows side. So this may be a Bleesing for him to become a Jet. I wish him the best of luck and hope he has great success with the New York Jets.

Mile High Contract for Peyton Manning
Peyton Manning has just received his contract with the Denver Broncos. It's what I expected. It's a mile high! 5 years 96 million!! I can't even imagine what that kind of money looks like.I believe the Colts made a bad decision in trading Manning. He had a rough year ONLY because of a bad shoulder. He's rehabilitated now. I'm looking for him to put up some staggering numbers. He may even break some of John Elways single season records. The NFL should be fun to watch this season.
It will be interesting to see where Tim Tebow goes also. He had a breakout year with the broncos. He is one of my favorite players. He's a christian. That's a huge plus. He has handled this situation like a true christian and professional should. My hat is off to Tebow. I just hope he gets a starting job where ever he ends up. Two PAC-10 teams may play for National Title this season
Oregon and USC are both going to be excellent teams this year. They will both most likely be undefeated when they meet this fall. They will both most likely be playing for a conference championship; the Rose Bowl: and a shot at the national title. Could we have a repeat of 2 same conference teams playing for the title again this tyear. The SEC has already made history this past season with sending Bama and LSU to the championship game. It will be interesting to see how it plays out this year with 2 PAC-10 favorites. Will Oregon and USC play for it?

Here's the latest college football news . Penn State has named Bill O'brien head coach. He's practically an unknown. Which is very good in my book because Penn State needs a fresh start. This school has had it's image tarnished worse than any school in history.
He's inheriting a program that noone wants to be a part of right now. His job is not only coaching football. His main job is going to be working to lift the stigma off the school. What stigma does it have? Penn State is now known as the school of pedophiles! Noone wants to coach there. Noone wants to play there.
Coach O'brien has ventured into shark infested waters with this program. He has to have alot of courage and confidence to take the position. The pressure on thi sman is tremendous. We won't even talk about the fact he is replacinng a legend in Joe Paterno. If he turns PSU around he will be more of a legend than Joe Pa ever came close to being.
Coach O'brien has some big shoes to fill. I believe he has a vision. He has an opportunity to take hold of this school and return it to greatness. If he can accomplish that awesome task then he may very well go down in the record books as the greatest coach to ever live. Good luck head coach Bill O'brien and PSU. Godspeed.

A poll supports the renaming of Penn States football field after Joe Paterno. My hat is off to "the man." He did a great job with that program. Thats some huge shoes to fill. Well an analyst for CBS sports is already predicting who will go to the National Championship game. His prediction is LSU vs. USC. I doubt USC will be there. Probation has cost them scholarships.
